In Bantu-speaking societies, most local religions involve beliefs in ancestral spirits and other entities. People offer prayers and sacrifices as tokens of respect for the dead, and to maintain proper relationships among the living. Mbandwa mediators act on other believers behalf by using trance or hypnosis and offering sacrifices to plead with the spiritual world in the name of the living.
