Honest Work Recordings is thrilled to announce its latest release, “Frozen Expression” by Slovenian underground legend Electronic Badminton King!.
A veteran DJ, producer and synth-nerd based in Ljubljana, E.B.King’s two-decade musical journey has seen him perform numerous DJ and live sets along some of the world’s best techno and electro artists. In addition to numerous performances as part of the Gumitwist club series at Klub K4, he was a regular guest at the cult and regionally infamous electro evening Elektroliza at Channel Zero and co-curated the compilation Electro City Ljubljana (2018). As part of the live acid trio Niplodok, he appeared on many regional festivals as well as the Ljubljana edition of Boiler Room in Klub K4. Over the years, he has put out a few well-recieved solo EP’s on labels like Scienceofuse and GLYK but returns here after a five-year sabbatical with his first mini album, “Frozen Expression” !
Betraying his influences from 90’s electronica and Detroit techno to atmospheric electro, “Frozen Expression” features six finely distilled moods and grooves whose catchiness belies the subtlety of the production. This album doesn’t aim to catch your attention with rapid-fire muscularity or other sonic gimmicks, instead drawing you in for a masterful lesson in slow-building grooves, discreet-yet-effective arrangements and pinpoint emotional content. Expression here is polished and refined, free of unnecessary distractions in an attempt to bring out the pure essence of a groove. Touching on a variety of genres, “Frozen Expression” is nonetheless made cohesive precisely in the ubiquitous approach of the experienced producer who has infused each track with a soulful quality despite their sonic efficiency. It’s a love letter to the purity of expression and expression itself, bringing the familiar melancholy of 90’s Detroit techno and hinted optimism found in UK electronica of the same era. At the same time, it’s a musical work of art that defies popular trends and lives in a space of its own; honest, timeless and hinting at other potential futures.
